Whistle Punk

Since we first released Whistle Punk DIPA, it’s been one of our most popular beers. Whistle Punk is a West Coast Hoppy and Juicy Dry Hopped Double IPA. While it has similar hop notes to those in Back in the Day, it’s centrifuged for a crisp, hoppy flavor.

Peter Dahlen, director of brewery operations, tells us more about Whistle Punk’s hop history:

There weren’t many local DIPAs around when this beer was first released, and we had a tremendous amount of positive feedback. Whistle Punk was one of our earliest forays into using large amounts of Amarillo, Citra, Mosaic, and/or Simcoe — even before the hazy trend took off. It’s been part of the evolution of DIPAs that use hop varieties that focus on tropical, citrus, and juicy flavors and aromas, instead of boasting the massive hop bitterness and bite in beers of the earlier DIPA style.

When head brewer Rusty Packer first envisioned this beer, he took everything he knew from living and brewing in California at the time and put it into this recipe. Whistle Punk has evolved over the years, but, says Rusty:

This is exactly how I would write a West Coast Double IPA recipe today…except with more dry hop poundage. It’s boldly aromatic with a strong juicy hop presence, while still having enough resinous hop character in it.

With an ABV of more than 8%, Whistle Punk is one of (if not the) strongest DIPA we’ve made. And it’s back on the shelves and in the Tasting Room and brewpubs in 16oz 4-packs, on draft, and growlers to go.
